AC Drives or alternative current drives are a type of electrical drive that is used for accurate control of AC motor speed. Controlling the motor speed is the prime function of AC drives. All these different Ac drives work on the same principal of converting incoming voltage and frequency into variable frequency and voltage output. Induction AC Drive a this motor drive induces current into the rotor winding in the absence of any physical connection with the stator windings. This type of AD drive is adaptable to different environments and designed for considerable power and variable speed control. In induction motors, there is built-in mechanism to track loss of exact speed.

Synchronous AC drive a this type of motor functions on constant speed to the maximum load. The rotor speed is equivalent to the speed of the statora s rotating magnetic field. Reluctance and permanent magnet are two main types of synchronous motors and such motors are used where the exact speed of a drive should be sustained.

Sensorless vector drives a these drives press into action autonomous control of both frequency and voltage supplied to the motor for optimum speed control. This type of AC drive is designed for low-speed torque output when coming near to DC motors. In this drive, sensorless denotes that no feedback sensor like a resolver or encoder is employed.

Servo motor drives a this type is typically everlasting magnet synchronous motor which can be characterized by low torque-to-inertia ratio for increased acceleration ratings. The motor in this drive is controlled by instructions coming from a PLC (programmable logic controller). It performs feedback control by receiving signals from an encoder.

Application of AC drives:

AC drives find application in diverse types of electrical appliances, machines and equipment. Some of the most common use is in transportation systems, electrical locomotives, textile mills, motors, robots, fans, pumps, factories, and several others. AC motor cannot function on DC supply. Since most of AC motors need alternating flux and not static flux.  It is known that AC can generate alternating flux. That is the reasons AC motor cannot run on DC supply.

DC motor is known to possess several advantage of AC motor. The advantages are quick starting and stopping, high starting torque, and variable speeds with voltage input. These motors are easier to control than AC. Therefore, DC motors enable better control and produce better speed variation and yield more torque.

The main reason for converting AC into DC and then again into AC is that the DC motor has the ability to store electrical energy which AC motor cannot do. Most of the electrical devices need constant or stable voltages which is why AC is converted into DC by using rectifiers.

 AC drives or motors are also called variable frequency drive that oscillates between negative and positive current. The energy stored in DC drive then creates output AC waveform using the fast-switching transistors. The conversion of DC into AC is done to control electrical motor speed that is aimed at decreasing mechanical stress on motor and also maximize the operation of different appliances depending on electric motors.


AC drives stand for alternative current drives whereas DC Drives are direct current drives. The working principal of AC drives is that it takes AC input and then converts it to DC and converts the DC back to AC. While DC drive’s functionality is more simple. It converts AC input into DC current to provide power to a motor.
AC Drives controls the speed of motors in a machine or appliance by varying output voltage and frequency. This action is performed through a high-tech microprocessor controlled electronics device. AC drive features an inverter and rectifier. Inverter converts DC voltage in AC voltage and rectifier converts AC into DC voltage.
As a working principal, AC power cannot be stored but DC power can be stored. Electrical energy needs to be stored for propelling motors. Also, devices need consistent voltage and to get constant voltage AC voltage needs to be converted into DC voltage using a rectifier.
AC drives are smaller and cheaper than DC drives. The cost variation is because of the rotor design of DC drive that makes it expensive.
