Bentonite in civil engineering applications is traditionally used as a thixotropic, support and lubricant agent in diaphragm walls and foundations, in tunnelling, in horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and pipe jacking. Bentonite, due to its viscosity and plasticity, is also used in Portland cement.
