Biodiesel is an alternative fuel and often refers to methyl ester of long chain fatty acids of vegetable oils. It can be used in compression ignition engines without any modification. It is produced by continuous trans-esterification reaction with methanol with caustic soda as catalyst. The reaction takes place in two or three stages with subsequent washing drying and polishing of the product. Nearly 100 percent conversion of the triglycerides in the oil or fat to biodiesel takes place. The excess methanol is recovered and the biodiesel is filtered to remove potential impurities. The trans-esterification process is most efficient when the feedstock quality of the phosphorus and fatty acid is at least equivalent to refined and bleached oil (RB). Removing the phosphorus and fatty acids is critical to producing the highest quality bio diesel for the lowest cost. Phosphorus and fatty acids are inhibitors to the reaction and increases the processing cost.
