In this brass sculpture and posture Lord Ganesha is depicted with his four hands. The upper right hand has a a Pharsaa or an axe symbolizing cutting attachment bonds. The lower right hand is raised with palm facing outwards away from the body with fingers flexed. This hand gesture is called a Abhayamudraa that offers protection for all from all evils. The upper left hand is shown holding a conch, a Shankhaa in Hindi. The sound of the conch is considered pious in Hinduism and represents the call to come and pray. The lower left hand holds a special sweet called a Modak or Laddooa .
