Acorus calamus is a small genus of herbs comprising of two species found in north temperate regions and southeast Asia. Calamus is found is abundance throughout India, ascending to heights of 6000 feet in the Himalayas. In India, it is often cultivated in damp marshy places and is fairly common in Manipur, Naga hills, Kashmir and Sirmon. The calamus rhizomes have been used in many different ways. It has been used medicinally for its relaxant, spasmolytic and hypertensive properties. In addition, calamus and its extract has also been used as an insecticide. In recent times the essential oil of calamus are widely used in flavours for liqueurs as well as in fine perfumes. A calamus includes four cytotypes such as diploid, triloid, teraploid and hexaploid. The chemical composition of their essential oil depends on the plant organs such as leaves or rhizomes and on ploidy . the essential oils of the diploid forms Contained a mixture of shyobunones (13-45%) whereas the essential oils of the triploid forms reported a mixture of shyobunones (23-32%) and -asarone (8-19%). In contrast the tetrploid forms for cbtaining the calamus oil of commerce that possessed these common compounds: cis-methyl isoeugenol (90.4%), a mixture of shyobunones (1-53%) and -asarone (12-96%)11. There is evidence that triploid chemotype seems to be larger in variations. It may be due predomince of asexual reproduction in southeast Asian chemotypes. On the other hand, the diploid seems to be rather uniform and is characterized by the rhizome oil without -asarone while the top leaf oil with geranyl acetate and or -farnesene as main constituents. Similarly, the triploid form showed genetic uniformity with regard to essential oil production from Europe and American accessions. The deied rhizomes possess insectidal and repellent properties. Its essential oil is reported to have spasmolytic neuropharmacolgicdal and antibacterial activity. In Mongolia, the traditional medicine uses tea and tinctures as a toinc, as an appetizer to treat stomacgic, intestinal disorder and skin disease12 etc. In Ayurvedic system of medicine the rhizomes are considered to possess antispasmodic, carminative, anthelmintic properties and are used to cure many disorders such as epilepsy and mental disease. The essential oil from rhizome is used for preparstion of aromatic cordials liqueurs, , in perfume and dental preparations. The calamus oil was examined for the stability of -asarone and -asarone in ethanolic and aqueous so;utions. It was found that the solutions of both aserones were stored in the dark at ambient temperatures for six months, no chemical transformations were observed. However, when the solutions were stored in day light, rapid osomerization of both asarones took place. In fact, no -asarone could be detected in the solutions after six months17.
