Petcoke is the bottom of the barrel product, comprising of relatively pure carbon. It is produced from heavy residues by coker units in refineries. Petcoke is a high calorific value, high sulphur, low volatile fraction fuel. It is cheaper than many fuels on a calorific basis. Raw or green Petcoke is formed from the coker unit. Raw Petcoke with higher metal & Sulphur content can be used as a fuel and this is called fuel grade Petcoke. Petcoke is a relatively new fuel in the Indian market. Petcoke supply and demand are increasing at a high rate. Petcoke demand in India is expected to be robust due to its competitive cost and better availability compared to Coal. It has a very high Gross Calorific Value of 8500 approximately, almost double than that of the local and imported coal on Air Dried Basis. Moisture Content in Petcoke is only 7% compared to 20- 25% in Imported Coal offering much more extra solid material for burning.
