Sodium dichromate is a red or orange crystalline, chemical compound with the formula Na2Cr2O7..Usually, the salt is handled as its dehydrate form ( Na2Cr2O7 2H2O ) .It is water soluble and insoluble in alchohol. Its melting point is 357 C and boiling point is 400 C .
Chemical properties : Sodium dichromate is the basic requirement for the preparation of all chromium compounds . It forms acidic solution in water giving a PH of 4 for 1% solution . It undergoes hydration when heated at 105 C . It is a strong reducing agent and its stability is incompatible with other strong acids. This compound too holds the capacity to oxidize benzylic and allylic C-H bonds .
