Smart meters, often known as digital or electronic electricity meters, track a household's energy consumption at least every 30 minutes. Typically once each day, the meter communicates this information to the meter servicing company. This information is also available to residents, although it will take a little more work than it would if it were just printed on the meter itself. Digital meters, in contrast to smart meters, can record power use in 30-minute intervals, but they cannot transmit this information to the service provider. Although interval meters can support time-of-use pricing, they still need to be read or have their data downloaded periodically.
