The APAP machine has an advantage over the CPAP machine since it may be set as a CPAP machine (by setting both the high pressure setting and low pressure setting at the same number). As time goes on, APAP could prove to be the superior and more cost-effective machine. When properly adjusted, CPAP pressure will prevent the complete obstruction of the airway that causes obstructive apneas. The exact amount of air that is needed to prevent certain events is provided by APAP, however. Because of this, APAP treatment is more comfortable for patients because the average pressure is reduced more than in CPAP treatment.
