Air Conditioner Parts: An Overview
An air conditioner is similar to an orchestra in that it has many separate sections that all work together in symphony and achieve the desired effect and supply the room with either cool or warm air. When your air conditioner is operating correctly, you won't even be aware that there are a number of different components tucked away inside the inconspicuous box, all working together to ensure that everything runs smoothly. However, if you dig further, you'll find that the components of the air conditioner are connected to one another in a confusing labyrinth.
Air Conditioner Parts - Types & Functions
The primary responsibility of an air conditioner is to bring the temperature of the air inside down. However, that is not the only thing that it can do. Through the use of a thermostat, air conditioners are able to measure and control the temperature of the surrounding air. In addition to that, they include an internal filter that cleans the circulating air by removing any airborne particles that may be present. Dehumidification is another function that air conditioners do. Because temperature is one of the most important factors in determining relative humidity, lowering the temperature of a quantity of humid air causes that air to expel some of the moisture that it contains. That's why we see drains and pans that collect moisture near or linked to air conditioning units, and that is also why air conditioners expel water whenever they operate on days when the humidity is high.
Types of Air Conditioner Parts
It's easy to forget how much of a difference our refrigerators & air conditioners make in our lives. However, in the past, only the wealthy could afford to indulge in such luxuries. At this time, approximately 97% of houses in the southern United States have one cooling system, but only 65% of residences in the western states have. But in all seriousness, how do air conditioner’s function? It is essential to have an understanding of the five primary components that make up an air conditioner as well as the functions that each one serves in order to comprehend how it operates.
The 5 main parts of an air conditioner are:
- Refrigerant
- Compressor
- Condenser Coil
- Expansion Valve
- Evaporator Coil
Functions of Different Types of Air Conditioner Parts?
1. Refrigerant
A particular fluid that is essential to the functioning of cooling and freezing equipment is referred to as refrigerant. This fluid is also known by its brand name, Freon. The heat is transferred from the interior of the building to the exterior using a closed-loop system that runs automatically. You might consider the refrigerant to be the messenger or the passenger in this scenario. We make use of a substance called refrigerant because it can convert from a liquid to a vapour at temperatures that are suitable for the cooling cycle.
The internal unit of an air conditioner is connected to the outer unit via the refrigerant that flows through the cooling tubes & copper coils of the device. It transitions from a gas to a liquid state as it takes in heat from the air within your home. After picking up heat from the air within, the refrigerant makes its way to the external unit, where it expels the heat into the surrounding environment.
After the refrigerant has released its heat into the atmosphere, it transitions back into its gaseous condition and returns to the interior space of the building. After the temperature of the refrigerant has returned to normal, an interior fan will begin to blow air over cold coils, which will then cause the cold air to be circulated throughout the house. When you turn on your air conditioner, this cycle will continue on indefinitely.
2. Compressor
The function of a compressor is to increase the pressure on the refrigerant, which in turn causes the temperature of the liquid to rise. When you condense the refrigerant, it will warm up because of the combined gas law, which is a combination of Boyle's Law, Charles' Law, and Gay-Law. Lussac's This law states that if the pressure increases, so does the temperature; therefore, if you increase the pressure, the temperature will also increase.
This is accomplished by compressing the gas into an extremely compact space.
In order to bring the temperature of the refrigerant up to a level that is higher than the temperature outside, we heat it. Because heat naturally travels from hotter to cold bodies, the temperature of the refrigerant needs to be higher than that of the air outside in order for it to be able to release heat into the environment. Because of this, we require the compressor so that its pressure, and consequently, its temperature, can be raised.
3. Condenser Coil
The external air conditioning unit contains the condenser coil for the system. The compressor supplies it with the high-pressure, high-temperature refrigerant, which it then distributes throughout the system. One way to think of it is as the condenser coil, which is the reverse of the evaporator coil. The evaporator coils are the ones that hold the cold refrigerant, while the condenser coils are the ones that hold the heated refrigerant.
The condenser coil are constructed in a way that makes it easier for heat to be transferred to the air outside. With the assistance of the condensing fan, the refrigerant is able to expel heat energy into the environment. This is accomplished by passing air over coils. After losing its heat to the surrounding environment, the refrigerant condenses back into a liquid state. This liquid then flows through the expansion valve, that reduces the pressure in the system, hence lowering the temperature of the refrigerant.
4. Expansion Valve
Once the liquid refrigerant has passed through the condenser, it will have lost some of its heat, but it will not be cool enough to reach the evaporator coils at this point. It is necessary to bring the temperature of the refrigerant down before it can move on to the evaporator coils. The expansion valve, also called as a metering device, often takes the form of a thermostatic expansion valve, and it is utilised in this context.
Using the ideas that comprise the combined gas law once more, which dictate that when pressure lowers, so does its temperature upon which the expansion valve rapid depressurization cools the refrigerant. This is how the combined gas law works. The pressure on the liquid refrigerant is relieved by an expansion valve, which makes it possible for the refrigerant to transform from a liquid to a vapour or gas within the evaporator. In addition to that, it regulates the volume of refrigerant and voltage flow that goes into the evaporator.
5. Evaporator Coil
Evaporator coils are a component of an air conditioner that are of critical importance. It is the part of the system that is responsible for the air conditioner effectively extracting heat from the interior of your home. The depressurized liquid refrigerant is sent from the expansion valve to the copper tubes in the refrigeration system. The heat from within the home is sucked up by the cold coils when the warm air emanating from the home is blown over them.
The second law of thermodynamics, which stipulates that heat always flows freely from hot to cold, is responsible for this phenomenon. In the same way that the condenser coils are dependent on the assistance of the condenser fan to promote heat exchange, the evaporator coils are dependent on the assistance of the fan that is located in the interior air handler (also known as the blower). In the process of drawing heat from the surrounding air, the refrigerant begins to vaporise and transform into a vapour.
