PRODUCT INFORMATION:
Tympany is one of the important diseases responsible for production loss and mortality in cattle. Ruminal tympany or bloat is an over distension of the rumen and reticulum with gases of fermentation, usually mixed with ingesta as froth. Tympany causes heavy losses through death and severe loss of production (Blood and Radostits, 1989). The incidence of the disease is high during winter due to availability of green lush pasture for grazing. The soluble protein present in the leaves causes formation of stable foam that entraps the small air bubble amongst them leading to failure of animal to eruct gases out of rumen. The condition poses a danger to life of animal, if remain unattended. The disease not only causes excess accumulation of gases that exert a pressure on diaphragm making respiration difficult but also results in alterations in the rumen environment i.e. change in pH, decrease in the number and activity of microbes and atony of rumen.
The changes in the rumen need to be corrected along with expulsion of gases so as to bring the animal in its normal productive status. Therefore, the agents with only carminative action are of limited use as they assist eructation of gases but do not take care of altered ruminal functions. Moreover, the agents available for therapy have
