Calcium carbonate with chemical formula CaCO3 is found in nature as rock in all parts of the world. Another source is shells of marine organisms, snails, and eggshells. It is the active ingredient in agricultural lime, and is usually the principal cause of hard water.

It is commonly used for following applications:

* Medicinally it is used as a calcium supplement or as an antacid. Its high consumption can be hazardous
* Calcium carbonate is used in the construction industry as a building material (e.g. marble), limestone aggregate for road building, as an ingredient of cement and as the starting material for the preparation of builder's lime by burning in a kiln
* It is also used in the purification of iron from iron ore in a blast furnace
* Calcium carbonate is used as a formation bridging and filtercake sealing agent in drilling fluids in the oil industry
* Used as a weighting material to increase the density of drilling fluids to control down hole pressures
* It is also used in growing Seacrete or Biorock.
