Barium sulfate with the chemical formula BaSO4 is a white crystalline solid. Its chemical property is solubility in concentrated sulfuric acid and poor solubility in water and other traditional solvents. The mineral barite is available in nature as a common ore of barium and is mainly barium sulfate. The premium quality array finds application as a part of a catalytic mixture to selectively reduce (or hydrogenate) alkynes to cis-alkenes (the mixture consists of palladium, a carbon substrate, barium sulfate and quinoline).
