Compressed natural gas, or CNG, is natural gas under pressure which remains clear, odorless, and non-corrosive. Although vehicles can use natural gas as either a liquid or a gas, most vehicles use the gaseous form compressed to pressures above 3,100 pounds per square inch. CNG is stored under high pressure; however, the range of flammability and combustion is much more narrow with CNG, making it safe, CNG will not burn at concentrations below 5% or above about 15% when mixed with air. An odorant is added to provide a distinctive and intentionally disagreeable smell that is easy to recognize. The odor is detectable at one-fifth of the gas' lower flammability limit.
