Concentrated Sulfuric Acid Solution:
When pure 100 per cent acid is heated, sulphur trioxide gas, SO3, is released, resulting in a constant-boiling solution, or azeotrope, comprising around 98.5 per cent H2SO4 at 337A C. Because so little of it dissociates into ions at ambient temperature, concentrated sulfuric acid is a weak acid (see acids and bases) and a poor electrolyte. It does not react readily with ordinary metals like iron or copper when it is cold. When heated, it acts as an oxidizer, reducing the sulphur content and perhaps releasing sulphur dioxide gas. Most metals and numerous nonmetals, such as sulphur and carbon, react with hot concentrated sulfuric acid. Water has a high attraction to concentrated sulfuric acid. It may be used to dehydrate (chemically remove water from) numerous substances, including carbohydrates, and is sometimes employed as a drying agent.
Large amounts of heat are created when concentrated acid reacts with water; enough heat can be released at once to boil the water and splatter the acid. To dilute the acid, slowly pour it into cold water while swirling constantly to prevent heat development. Sulfuric acid forms hydrate with unique characteristics when it combines with water.
