The first crown ether was synthesized by Charles Pederson (Fig. 19.20) while working. For this work Pedersen was co-awarded the 1987 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Crown ethers are cyclic compounds composed of several ether groups. The most common crown ethers are oligomers of ethylene oxide with repeating units of (CH2CH2O)n where n = 4 (tetramer), n = 5 (pentamer), or n = 6 (hexamer).
