Divalproex sodium is an oral pharmaceutical dosage form for treating the symptoms of epileptic seizures or convulsions, containing as the active principal an oligomer having a 1:1 molar ratio of sodium valproate and valproic acid of the unit formula, (CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 ) 2 CHCO 2 Na/(CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 ) 2 CHCO 2 H, and containing about 4 such units.
It is used in the for the treatment of the manic episodes of bipolar disorder. In rare cases, it is also used as a treatment for major depressive disorder, and increasingly taken long-term for prevention of both manic and depressive phases of bipolar disorder, especially the rapid-cycling variant.
