Zirconia is a very hard and durable material, with low thermal conductivity, high strength and flexibility. Because of certain additives, the material has a high resistance to corrosion and a melting point higher than Alumina. Zirconia (ZrO2) products can withstand the high temperature up to 2100A C. It is an ideal material for the melting of precious metals and super-alloys which have melting point higher than 1800A C.

Furthermore, additions of some oxides (MgO, CaO,Y2O3) to pure zirconiadepress allotropic transformations (crystal structure changes) and allow to stabilize either cubic or tetragonal structure of the material at any temperature.
