Stainless steel scrap containing a chromium content in excess of 10.5% is the most commonly used grade due to the high corrosion resistance and heat resistance, low-alloyed stainless steel scrap is mainly used in many stages of iron and steel making.
Stainless steel scrap is high-alloy steel. It contains more than 11% Chromium (Cr) by weight and more than 0.15% Carbon (C). Stainless steel scrap can be classified into types 400 and 300. Type 400 is magnetic, while type 300 non-magnetic. Stainless steel scrap provides a good example of the selection and use in classifying scrap by chemistry rather than physical appearance alone since all stainless steels appear similar.
