It is an ultrafine, pozzolanic SCM that is used as an additive in concrete with OPC. It is graded in accordance with the standard specifications of ASTM C 1240. Some notable standard properties are as follows: CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Nature Amorphous Silicon Dioxide Content > 85% Other Components Trace elements depending on type of fume PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Typical Particle Size 95%) Bulk Density (As produced) 130-430 kg/m3 (Densified) 480-720 kg/m3 Specific Surface Area 15-30 m2/gm Specific Gravity 2.2 In Concrete, silica fume as an SCM provides many benefits by causing significant changes in the microstructure of concrete. Silica fume, due to its small particle size (close to 1/100th of the cement particle size), acts as a microfiller in mixed concrete promoting very high particle packing. As a reactive pozzolanic material, the silica fume reacts with the cement during setting to form calcium silicate hydrate (CASH) phase which has much larger surface area and better binding, translating to improved hardness of the concrete. The high surface area of silica fume and low water content of silica-fume-concrete facilitates fewer channels formed because of water escape, as a direct result of reduced bleeding. This reduces the impact of chloride attack and corrosive agents, improving the durability of concrete - a coveted property in coastal cities such as Mumbai. Reduced bleeding helps significantly speed up finishing, resulting in a continuous one-pass-finishing process. The greater slump from increased cohesion also means thicker layers in shotcrete. The enhanced mechanical properties of high strength concrete include increased compressive strength and elastic modulus, proportional at all ages. Available: Silica Fume or Microsilica of various grades (Silica content ranging from 85 % to 95 %) in Densified and Undensified forms for use in various high strength concrete applications.
