Optical character recognition (OCR) is defined as electronic translation of scanned images of handwritten, typewritten or printed text into machine-encoded text. It is a very old technique invented in the year 1929. OCR is used to convert paper documents into electronic files which can be made fully searchable and selectable. PDF Normal became popular format for web publishing because OCR technique made PDF files compact and searchable. Most of the OCR engines highlight so called "suspect" words and allow editing of the word by looking at the bit-map image of the suspect word. Most engines allow checking recognized text character by character so that user is saved from surprises which OCR engines sometimes throw. Using this facility one can aim at 100% textual accuracy leading to 100% search ability.
