One of the most common minerals in the Earth's continental crust, Quartz, is a type of piezoelectric crystal. When mechanical stress is put upon it, it creates electricity through a process called 'piezoelectricity'. Naturally occurring quartz crystals of extremely high purity, necessary for the crucibles and other equipment used for growing silicon wafers in the semiconductor industry, are expensive and rare.
