The modern paper cup dates from the twentieth century. Sharing glasses or dippers at water sources like school faucets or railroad water barrels was widespread in the early twentieth century. As a result of this widespread use, public health concerns have arisen. In August 1908, a paper by Alvin Davison, a biology professor at Lafayette College, was published in Technical World Magazine with the provocative headline "Death in School Drinking Cups," based on investigations conducted in Easton, Pennsylvania's public schools. In November 1909, the Massachusetts State Board of Health reproduced and disseminated the article.
