Property: Colorless or white translucent fragment or powder. mp179.75A C. bp204A C. d254 0.992.fp 64A . At 25A C one gram dissolves in about 800ml water, in 1ml ether, 0.5ml chloro form, 0.4ml benzene, 0.4ml acetone, 1.5ml oil of turpentine, 0.5ml glacial acetic acid. Soluble in aniline, nitrobenzene, carbon disulfide, petroether. Camphor has a peculiar tenacity and cannot be powdered in a mortar unless it is moistened with an organic solvent. Familiar fragrant and penetrating odor. Slightly bitter and cooling taste. Sublimes appreciably at room temperature.
Use: Excellent plasticizer for cellulose esters and ethers; used in manufacturing of plastics, especially celluloid; in lacquers and varnishes; in pyrotechnics; in embalming fluids; as moth repellent, as perservative in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics; in compounding excitant and cardiac stimulant; in manufacturing cymene, camphor-10-sulfonic acid, camphor sulfonic acid sodium salt, camphotamide, camphorcarboxylic acid, champhoric acid, camphol, bornyl acetate, isobornyl acetate atc.
