Visual Literacy Phonemic Awareness Organizing Sequencing/ Alphabet Books Audience: Children

Depending on the historical function, abc books may include illustrations, rhymes, a syllabarium, prayers, biblical texts, or stories in addition to the alphabet. These alphabet books cover letters and sounds, visual literacy, phonemic awareness, organising skills, sequencing skills, item identification and labelling, content area information, and themes. It can also help kids learn to count how many letters are in a word, emphasising the concept that words are made up of groups of letters. While teaching with alphabet books, we can work on phonemic awareness and introduce the notion of beginning sounds. Students at the emergent reading and writing level require intensive instruction in the alphabet and sounds in order to build their alphabet knowledge and phonological awareness. Using words to teach letters and sounds integrates the abilities and immediately teaches how to apply them.
