Binders are polymers that form films and are required for the best results. Textile fibres have no affinity for pigments. As a result, pigment particles adhere to the fabric's surface. Binders are sticky coatings that produce polymeric polymers and adhere pigment particles to the surface of fibres or fabrics. Binders are a milky white liquid. During curing, it leaves a very thin, undetectable layer on the textile surface. Pigment particles remain adhered under this coating. Binder is an essential ingredient in pigment dyeing and printing.
Binders commonly contain particles with diameters ranging from 0.05 to 2 microns. These have about 6% reactive groups by weight for cross-linking the binder to the cloth.
