Q. What are the characteristics of ebonite rods?
Answer
Hard rubber, of which ebonite is a brand name, is produced by heating natural rubber to extremely high temperatures and then slowly cooling it. From twenty-five percent (25%) to eighty percent (80%), sulfur and linseed oil can be found in ebonite. Due to the nature of the reaction that takes place, a significant amount of the sulfur is heavily cross-linked by intramolecular addition at the double bonds, creating ring structures inside the molecule.
