GelexGELEXT: GELEX bentonite extender is a flocculating polymer capable of doubling the yield of bentonite used to formulate low-solids, non-dispersed systems. GELEX has the ability to provide increased viscosity with out an excessive amount of clay solids. This makes GELEX an excellent additive for low-solids drilling fluids.  GELEX also tends to cause reactive drill solids, especially fine silty ones, to form agglomerates and settle out. This further enhances its use as an additive in either weighted or unweighted, nondispersed drilling fluid systems. It can be used as a selective flocculant. The recommended initial treatment is 0.05 lb/bbl (0.143 kg/m3) of GELEX. Subsequent treatments are based on bentonite additions, with one 2-lb bag of GELEX for each five to eight 100-lb (45.4-kg) sacks of bentonite added. GELEX is most effective in lowsalinity (<3,000 mg/l chlorides) and low-hardness fluids.
